چکیده

Experiments were conducted to measure downward flame spread over PMMA spheres, and an underpinning theoretical basis was developed explain the relevant mechanisms governing spherical geometries. Flame a sphere classified into two distinct regimes, that being upper lower hemispheres. using cast spheres 40 50 mm in diameter. Samples ignited at top of progression front determined video analysis. The time resolved rate found increase nearly linearly while across hemisphere sample (at rates ranging from approximately 2.0–3.5 mm/min). on observed accelerate nonlinearly reaching instantaneous greater than 15 mm/min. be unsteady (i.e., continuously increasing) throughout each experiment. A Stokes flow solution adequately characterize opposed with respect induced buoyant flow. controlled by combination increasing velocity ambient increased heat transfer through interior solid. for diameter tested normalized presented as function relative angle inclination front, θ. Thus, regimes identified this work are largely independent size diameters used study. study provides unique condition observe transition dictated well-defined one which effects solid become increasingly significant.

Prediction of Three-Dimensional Downward Flame Spread Characteristics over Poly(methyl methacrylate) Slabs in Different Pressure Environments

The present study is aimed at predicting downward flame spread characteristics over poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) with different sample dimensions in different pressure environments. Three-dimensional (3-D) downward flame spread experiments on free PMMA slabs were conducted at five locations with different altitudes, which provide different pressures. Pressure effects on the flame spread rat...

Evaluation of the Extinction Factor in a Laminar Flame Established over a PMMA Plate in Microgravity

A methodology for estimating the extinction factor at λ = 530 nm in diffusion flames is presented. All experiments have been in microgravity and have as their objective the production of quantitative data that can serve to evaluate the soot volume fraction. A better understanding of soot formation and radiative heat transfer is of extreme importance to many practical combustion related processe...

Field Modelling of Non-Charring Flame Spread

The paper describes a methodology for the field modelling of non-charring flame spread over representative solid surfaces. Coupled descriptions of the controlling mechanisms of buoyancydriven flow, combustion, soot production, radiation heat transfer and solid pyrolysis are incorporated into a fire-specific CFD code. The approach is evaluated at sub-model level and in a room corner fire configu...

Radiation-Driven Flame Spread Over Thermally-Thick Fuels in Quiescent Microgravity Environments

Microgravity experiments on flame spread over thermally-thick fuels were conducted using foam fuels to obtain low density and thermal conductivity, and thus large spread rate (Sf) over thermally-thick fuels compared to dense fuels such as PMMA. This scheme enabled meaningful results to be obtained even in 2.2 second drop tower experiments. It was found that, in contrast conventional understandi...
